Law - Gospel in American Society

Posted in Uncategorized on November 1st, 2006 by His Holiness

Last week we talked about the difference between Law and Gospel, and how to identify something as one or the other.

Your assignment for this week is to identify 3 things that you have heard religious leaders, or contemporary culture identify as Gospel, that are really Law. You need to be specific about the “thing” idea or statement, and you need to explain how that thing represents “Law” and not Gospel – as well as identify who it is that has identified this law as Gospel.

For example: Many people identify Santa Clause as an example of the Gospel, or good news. They do this because they believe the gifts they receive from Santa Clause are free. The truth is however, that Santa Clause is an example of Law – because Santa Does not offer you a free gift, Santa offers you a reward for good behavior. Santa says, “If you behave, then you will get a toy.” The “If, Then” formulation being a classic means of identifying the Law.

You may not copy other people’s answers – so if someone before you has used one of your examples, you need to find a new example. It pays to answer early.

On Christmas you could give all the money you were going to use for others and give it to people who are less fortunite and can not afford to buy presents. Another thing is instead of having a huge Thanksgiving feast or meal give some of the food you baught to the food pantry or some money. Another example would be instead of returning a present because it doesn’t fit you or you don’t like it give it away or if you still return it give the money to someone who needs it more than you do.

First, if you don’t go to our church you could do what we usually do. We put the names of children on the tree and you can pick a name. Then you go and buy presents for them. Usually the children are happy to get anything, so its not like they will send it back. When somebody a present it is good and exciting news. Doing this somewhat makes us the Santa Clause in the story. So “if” they’re good they get presents. That’s a law.
Second, is that if you see a homeless person you could give him some $. When you help them out it makes them happy and is pretty good news to them. But, it is a law because it is what we do for god. We are helping take care of gods children. So that makes this a law. I’m not sure if that is the right definition of the word law.
Third, is the fact that if you do something to help someone that it will most likely be a law. It may seem like a gospel and a law, but in the end it is just a law. These are a couple of things that seem like a gospel but is a law.

On Christmas dont ask for everything you want, but if you get everything you want be nice to share with anyone in your family or if you get money dont use it all give it to some people that you know that doesnt have a lot of money that you would want to help out. Dont always use your money try to give it to people who needs it more then you, or even try to donate the money to anyone you know that is poor or if you know someone that knows someone who you dont know give it to them to give it to the poor person.
