Thanksgiving
Posted in Uncategorized on November 21st, 2006 by His HolinessThis week is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, who’s most salient features include gluttony, and football. Thanksgiving is not a day recognized on the Christian calendar as a part of the church year. Despite this however, many churches, including ours, mark the day by holding a worship service.
Your question: Why do churches celebrate Thanksgiving, a secular holiday, and do you think that a worship service is the most appropriate way for a church to celebrate thanksgiving, or is their another activity the church could be involved in that would be more appropriate?

I think that the churches celebrate Thanksgiving because it is when people are supposed to think about what they are thankful for. I think that the church service is an appropriate way to celebrate Thanksgiving. There are other ways he church could be involved but they may or may not be more appropriate. They could hold a turkey dinner for anyone who wanted to come. Or they could go help somewhere else to help with a Thanksgiving meal. They could help raise money for the organizations that are having a Thanksgiving meal and then give the money to that organization. That is what I think the church could do instead.

I think that the service is appropriate because like what Michael said at Thanksgiving you think of all the things that help you. I didn’t go to the service but I was still thankful for many different things. If thanksgiving isn’t a religous holiday I think that a service is good. Other thinks that we could do is have a potluck. Everyone could bring a dish to share and we put a basket out. Any money that we collect in the basket we could give to an organization that helps homeless people. That way everyone can have a nice thanksgiving. You wouldn’t even have to go to church as long as you are a baptized believer or somebody else, they should be able to go. This is a way that you can show thanks and helping others have the best thanksgiving ever.

I think that the churches celebrate Thanksgiving because kids, adults, and anyone else are suppose to think about what they are thankful for. It could be family, and food. Thanksgiving is a hoilday that is celebrate by everyone because they are happy with what they got. I didnt go the service either on wednesday night(Like what jessie said) i have a lot of thigns to be thankful. Yes it is a good way to celebrate thanksgiving with a worship. I think this a great hoilday to be thankful for your things, family, friends, and you got a shelter over your head!
