Valentines Day

Valentines day is celebrated this week. Valentine’s day has been associated with St. Valentine, and as such has been described as a Christian holiday.

Your task for this week is first to do a little bit of research and find out who St. Valentine was, why his day was celebrated as a holiday, and then to reflect on the modern celebration of Valentine’s day in the United States and explain how the modern celebration is related to the Christian one, if at all.

Saint Valentine was ta martyred sanint of acient Rome. He had a feast named after him it was called the feast of Saint Valentine which was formerly celebrated on Feburary 14 by the Roman Catholic Church until the revised calendar in 1969. “Valanes” which makes up part of Valentine means “Being Strong”.
Valentines Day or Saint Valentines Day is on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other. Like by sending gifts to each other. It is named after a maytyrs whos last name was Valentine. It became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
Valentine’s Day is still celebrated today to show love for one another. I do not think that this is a Chirstian holiday because the one long ago was a big feast called “the feast of Saint Valentine” and the one today is to show love for one another. I also think that the people today expect to recieve someting on Valentine’s Day like candy or flowers or cards and that is why they like it. But I don’t think it is realated to the modern one at all.

Saint Valentine or Saint Valentinus refers to one or more martyred saints of ancient Rome. The feast of Saint Valentine was formerly celebrated on February 14 by the Roman Catholic Church.Saint Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day is on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine’s cards or candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine’s Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. This day is a holiday like any other thing is. This celebration is related to all of the christians, because that is where it first started. So I would say that this is definitely related subject to all the christians. It also means that we should love, save, care, and forgive one another. This is what Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine mean to me. I know this is similar to Michael’s, but I just got my information from the websites that you gave us.

In the Bible John 15: 13 reads “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” And that is just what St. Valentine did. St Valentine was a priest near Rome. Valentine was arrested for preforming Christian marriages but others say that he was helping christans escape prison. During the trial they asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman gods Jupiter and Mercury. Valentine said they were false gods and that the God that Jesus called Father was the only true God. So the Romans threw him in prison for insulting the gods. in prison a gard asked if his God could help his daughter. Valentine prayed and the girl was given her sight. When the emperor heard about this he was furious that Valentine was still making converts even in prison, so he had Valentine beheaded. he was willing to risk his life to free the prisoners and spread the good news of Jesus Christ to those who needed to hear it.John 15:13: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” St. Valentine demonstrated this love when he died for his friends. this is the kind of love that valentine’s day is really about. I don’t think people even new that there is a St. Valintine that lived a brethed on this earth. i think people these days just think that valintines day is a day of couples not what valintine did. it should be like memoral day to reflect on what happend and a day to be greatful for who you have.
